Digital Image Registration Method Using Boundary Maps,
TC(24), No. 9, September 1975, pp. 935-940. (NASA Huntsville). This method uses binary boundary maps to register images with limited differences in both translation and rotation. The edge data is correlated by summing over the edges that overlap for each possible translation, with the maximum value giving the correct translation. The orientation change is limited by what can be described as a local translation. The edge data gives improvements in speed over standard correlation or Fourier based techniques and is less prone to changes due to changes in the scene characteristics. By storing the edges as sequences of edge elements, the computational effort is also reduced. The basic concepts are similar to those used in the later segment matching programs. BibRef 7509
